Accounting Clerk

Performs double-entry accrual accounting work in order to maintain a combination of journals and ledgers. Examines, verifies, and analyzes a variety of documents to determine their mathematical correctness, validity and clerical accuracy. Documents may include purchase orders, vouchers, payrolls, property records, etc., which are complicated by discounts, partial payments, etc. Resolves disagreements by contacting vendor, completes posting documents with backup attached, codes documents, and posts to appropriate ledger or journal. Posts general ledger accounts each month to the MIS computerized accounting system. Balances output and makes corrections as necessary. Prepares worksheets and statements. Maintains files necessary to the operation of the accounting office. Types various materials such as correspondence, reports, forms, and checks. Makes daily distribution run. Performs receiving and disbursing cashier duties in accordance with operating instructions. Ensures that proper identification before disbursement is made. Issues and reimburses change funds as required. Prepares bank deposits and ensures daily deposits in a timely manner. Ensures that all monies are accounted for by balancing with the posting of funds placed in the activities safe before actual bank deposit. Prepares cash reports and notifies supervisor of any suspected irregularities. Reconciles commercial charges with the settlement detail reports from the charge terminals and performs other related duties as assigned. Experience:
Must have work experience that provided knowledge of double-entry accounting procedures and techniques; knowledge of procedures used to enter, modify, retrieve and delete information in an automated general ledger system; and the ability to analyze the interrelationship of accounts that are affected by varied transactions. Experience in responsible clerical or office work of any kind which demonstrated the ability to perform common arithmetic problems. Must also have experience in the receipt, disbursement, examination, deposit or other processing of cash items which includes the direct handling of cash items and the use of cash accountability control methods. Must be a qualified typist (40 wpm). Computer experience is required. Must be able to communicate both orally and in writing.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
